The free beach yoga celebrated their 50th event at Eden on the Bay last week.
Every Tuesday at 09:00, those interested in yoga make their way to Bloubergstrand for a special yoga session with 56-year-old Michael O’Rourke from Sunningdale who describes yoga as “becoming whole again, a beautiful union between body, mind and spirit”.
TygerBurger previously reported about the “yoga guru” who captured everyone’s heart with his free yoga classes (‘Yoga on the beach’, 7 December 2022).
O’Rourke stumbled across yoga about 10 years ago, completely unplanned.
“It was one of those serendipitous moments where I was drawn towards something but not knowing why at the time,” he says.
50th event donations
The event since grew from 10 people to sometimes over 100, doing regular stretches and yoga movements every Tuesday.
“Because of this sense of community and joy that we have created, we will be sharing our energy and love with an amazing charity. *
“Revolutionary Yoga started out some years ago offering free yoga to kids and adults in the areas of Cape Town that experience unthinkable daily changes.
“However, through this initiative, they simply could not ignore the hunger that they witnessed for both humans and pets.
They have since set up feeding stations throughout these areas and now they feed hundreds of people and pets every day.
“And of course the yoga continues.”
O’Rourke urged all who attended Tuesday’s event to show their support by donating dog and cat food, rice, legumes and pasta.
“I would also be hugely grateful if you can share this event with friends and perhaps ask organisations that you know to contribute.
“If Tuesday is not possible for you or you can’t get someone to drop some items, another option would be to donate via their website.”
O’Rourke says he was blown away by the presence of so many “joyous souls” that joined the classes last Tuesday.
“Thank you Theresa for joining us and thank you to @freefoodkitchen for the tremendous community work you are doing. I hope the donations will help feed many hungry people and animals.
“Remember to be kind. Remember to be loving. Remember to feel all your feelings and to take care of yourself. But most of all, remember to be happy.”
Classes start at 09:00. All welcome.
