An armed robbery took place at the Sterns jewellery store in Zevenwacht Mall around 10:30 on Wednesday morning, according to witnesses at the mall.
According to a store assistant from a neighbouring shop who wished to remain anonymous, the assailants entered via the store door, robbed the store, then fled around the back, where a getaway vehicle was presumably waiting.
“The robbers had black gloves on. One of them ran past our shop door with a gun in his hand,” she said.
The assistant told TygerBurger a trio of robbers broke the glass counters containing the jewellery, kept the two shop assistants at the back of the store and then fled with an undisclosed number of valuable items when they were done.
She said the two shop assistants tried to alert the mall’s security while the robbery was in progress. Police arrived on the scene quickly, she said.
No-one was visibly harmed in the incident, she said. “But we were all terrified, what with guns involved and were ordered to close shop, All the shops were closed until the police arrived.”
A manager at another nearby store told TygerBurger she was shocked at the events of the morning. “This type of thing [armed robbery] simply doesn’t happen at our mall.”
TygerBurger contacted mall management and police for comment on Wednesday morning, but had not received any by the time of issuing this report on Thursday.
