More than 350 participants embarked on the second Annual 5 km “Hot” Pink Walk in Bishop Lavis on Saturday 7 October.
Participants had the opportunity to raise awareness, show their support by walking in faith, love and hope.
According to Prudence Prins of the Department of Community Safety the walk most provided a community in unity for anyone who has been impacted by cancer. “Whether you are in treatment, celebrating survivorship or a family member, friend or loved one we have lost we all join each year in October and be part of our collective efforts and support structure forever,” she said.
Officers from law enforcement and the police, as well as officials from the City of Cape Town and the local neighbourhood watch and the community joined and assisted to ensure all participants’ safety.
“Young and old were dressed up in shades of pink,” Prins related. “As the coordinator and breast-cancer survivor in my sixth year of remission the support was overwhelming. Survivors walked bravely and CHOC also supported this initiative.
“Most definitely it will grow bigger and bigger each year,” says Prins.
The project has a roaming trophy sponsored by Trophies SA. Each year the trophy will be carried in memory of a participant of the walk the previous year and lost his or her battle due to cancer.
Their name will be engraved on the trophy. Last year, Jennifer Kordom was part of the first walk and sadly passed away early this year. Her name is engraved on the trophy.
After the walk there was a small ceremony and medals were handed out with different selection criteria and the following three were outstanding. They were:
- The eldest participant was Mary-Anne Davids who is 80 years old and completed the walk.
- Best Dressed was Yule Titus.
- Arline Stevens was awarded for her determination as a motivator.
Prins gave a big thank you to all who participated and partnered in making this event a success.
“I am sure we can just go from strength to strength, and most definitely we hope the walk will set off next year from the Bishop Lavis Sports Field as the group will be much bigger.”
