Elsie River police are investigating arson and malicious damage to property cases following unrest in Epping Avenue on Wednesday (28 December).

According to a source, angry residents set a scrapyard in Epping Avenue on fire, following the murder of a man and the attempted murder of a woman in a shooting incident the previous day.

Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson, Theo Layne, says on arrival firefighters were prevented by residents from accessing the scrapyard. He says police were called to the scene, where nine cars were ablaze.

“There were minor damages caused to the vehicles as people threw stones at the fire trucks, but none of the firefighters were injured,” he says.

Elsies River police spokesperson, Captain Ian Bennet, confirms the murder and says the 31-year-old victim was shot the Tuesday night, while the 26-year-old woman accompanying him had survived the shooting.

Bennet says in addition to the murder and attempted murder cases, police are now also investigating the malicious damage to property and arson cases.
