After seven years sport will return to the Lentegeur Sports Grounds in a big way, with the inaugural Mitchells Plain Youth Cup.
In a little over a month the highly-anticipated cup will feature 16 u-18 soccer clubs playing in the Mitchells Plain Local Football Association (LFA) in what promises to be two days of action-packed soccer action.
Tournament director and Ward 76 Councillor Avron Plaatjies said the teams will showcase their skills and compete for the top spot, bringing fresh excitement to the local football scene.
“The primary objective of this tournament is not only to celebrate football, but also to mark the rebirth of the Lentegeur Sports Ground, a site that has historically produced both domestic and international sports stars who have proudly represented South Africa,” he said.
“This event is more than just football; it’s about giving our youth positive platforms to excel, revitalising a space that holds so much history for our community.”
Symbol of pride
After extensive renovations to the field, the sports ground will again be a symbol of local pride with this tournament, said Plaatjies.
“It’s ready to reclaim its position as the home of talent and ambition. The tournament aims to provide young footballers with an alternative path to greatness, inspiring the next generation of stars.”
With R10 000 in prize money sponsored by Watergate Shopping Centre, other sponsors include MTN, Peninsula Beverages, Albany and Winelands Productions. The tournament is also supported by SAFA Cape Town, the City of Cape Town and the Western Cape Government. TygerBurger is the official Print Media partner.
“Watergate has consistently been a supporter of community upliftment, and this tournament is no exception,” said Plaatjies. “As a community-centred brand Watergate’s involvement underscores its commitment to fostering local talent and growth.”
With the tournament kicking off on 12 and 13 October, spectators are welcome. An entry fee of R10 per person and R10 per vehicle is applicable.
“This is an exciting time for Mitchells Plain, as we not only relaunch a historic sports venue but also demonstrate the incredible talent that exists within our community,” said Plaatjies.
“We encourage everyone to come out and support these young players as they take to the field, representing the future of football in Mitchells Plain.”
