Several patients are now seeing the world anew — with laughter and courage at Advanced Durbanville Surgical Centre — after they have received free cataract surgeries.
What begun with a few nerves and gentle reassurances always ends in laughter, hugs and bright new vision. That was once again the scene at Advanced Durbanville Surgical Centre last week, where nine of 11 patients received free cataract surgeries under the skilled care of Dr Junet van der Merwe (ophthalmologist) and Dr Matthys Theron (anaesthetist).
Each October, the day hospital transforms into a place of hope, humour, and healing — an event eagerly anticipated by both doctors and staff.
“Cataract surgery at Advanced Durbanville is a swift and seamless 15-minute procedure performed under local anaesthetic. Patients are awake, relaxed and back on their feet within hours — leaving not only with sharper sight but with full hearts and newfound friends,” says Van der Merwe.
This year’s surgeries even welcomed two returning patients completing their second eye operations — a testament to the trust and genuine bonds formed over the years, she says.
One of the patients, Wilhelmina de Jongh, admitted with a laugh: “I was nervous at first,” but before I knew it, it was over! Everyone made me feel so at ease — I will miss everyone and might just pop in for a quick hello”.
Waiting for operation
“The reality remains that across South Africa, thousands are still waiting — sometimes more than a year — for a cataract operation. Public hospitals face critical shortages of ophthalmologists, surgical equipment and consumables.
