The
man accused of being involved in the murder of slain Metro Police officer,
Constable Ben Koopman (53), appeared in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
The
accused, Christopher Jantjies (also known as “Doc”), faces charges of murder,
robbery and the possession of an unlicensed firearm.
This
follows the brutal murder of Koopman, a resident of Stratford Avenue in Devon
Park, Eerste River, in February this year.
Two
men attacked Koopman outside his house when he was about to climb into his
patrol vehicle. Koopman was shot in the back and died on the scene. The
suspects escaped with his service pistol and radio, which was found discarded
later that day.
Jantjies
(27) is the only suspect arrested since the attack.
On
Wednesday 17 November at around 11:40 Jantjies, dressed in red tracksuit
pants and black top, made a brief appearance in Court 1, where the matter was
set down for his bail application.
His
defence, however, indicated to magistrate Vincent Ketye that he had another
matter to attend to in the regional court and requested a postponement.
The
case was postponed until Friday 9 December.
On
Wednesday 5 October TygerBurger reported on the effect of his murder on
Koopman’s family.
“I
don’t know what will drive someone to do such a thing. I do not hate him for
what he did. I just want to leave everything in the hands of the Lord,”
Katriena Koopman told the reporter outside the court at a previous appearance.
Several
of Koopman’s colleagues, dressed in uniform, again attended the court
proceedings.
Jantjies
remains in custody.
The
matter is being investigated by the Hawks.
