Abalone worth R1m seized in Mfuleni

“A preliminary investigation conducted at the scene revealed that the Toyota Hilux bakkie had been reported as hijacked in Kleinvlei during the month.”


The Flying Squad last night (6 November) confiscated abalone with an estimated street value of R1 million in Eerste River Road in Mfuleni. 

According to Western Cape police spokesperson Sergeant  Noloyiso Rwexana members of the squad who were patrolling in the area noticed a suspicious looking vehicle. Upon stopping the vehicle and conducting a search, 5553 units of abalone were found inside 55 bags. 

Rwexana also confirms that a preliminary investigation conducted at the scene revealed that the Toyota Hilux bakkie had been reported as hijacked in Kleinvlei  during the month. 

“Three men, aged 36, 42 and 46 years old were arrested and, once charged, will appear in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court,” says Rwexana. “Protecting our marine resources remains at the core of the police mandate.”
