A man was arrested in
Goodwood this morning (Wednesday 1 August) when abalone was found in his car.
A
statement from Captain FC Van Wyk, provincial police spokesperson, says a joint
operation by the Crime Intelligence unit and the Flying Squad led to a VW Polo Vivo
being pulled over at the corner of Goodwood and Voortrekker Roads.
Upon
searching the vehicle numerous plastic bags containing shucked abalone were
found covered with plastic sheets in the boot, as well as behind the seats of
the car.
The driver of the car, a 23 year old man from Zwelihle, Hermanus, was arrested
and is being detained at Goodwood police station where the abalone was counted
by officials from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
It amounted to 1522 units of shucked abalone valued at R760 000.
The arrested suspect will appear in the Goodwood Magistrates’ Court on charges
under the Living Marine Resources Act
