No fatalities were reported in yesterday’s (Sunday 11 May) accident on the R300, where the driver of a bakkie carrying over 20 people on the back lost control and overturned. The incident occurred around 10:25 in a northbound direction near the Old Paarl Road offramp in Brackenfell.

According to medics at the scene, 21 people sustained minor injuries, with three in critical condition. Emergency services responded swiftly, providing assistance to the injured and clearing the area. It was later ascertained that the vehicle, a Toyota Hilux bakkie, with its passengers were on its way to a church in Stikland.

While authorities were on the scene to investigate the cause of the accident, many concerns have been raised on social media about the safety of transporting passengers on the back of open vehicles, a regular occurrence that goes unchecked on Cape Town roads.

Kevin Jacobs, spokesperson for the City’s traffic services, says traffic officers were dispatched to the accident scene at 10:40, and that the roadway was reopened at 12:24.

When asked whether any action was taken against the driver, Jacobs referred TygerBurger to the police.

Brackenfell police informed the newspaper that the accident was recorded by police.
